I’ve been using Gimp for several years, and as a result, I decided to write a short book on the 5 principles of photo editing. My goal in writing this book wasn’t to teach people how to edit photos with gimp, the goal was to teach people good habits that seperate the decent photo editors from the great ones. • Thank you for this beginner’s guide to Gimp.

I am moving to Gimp from Photoshop and I have a question.

I am use to always returning to the simple pointer (or arrow) mode between using tools.

I cannot find that in Gimp.

Is it the case that one tool or another is always active?

    Thanks for your help.

      Hey Therese,

Yes…awkwardly enough there is always a tool active. You get used to it eventually.

I weaned off of my urge to click on that Photoshop tool by clicking on the move tool in gimp instead. It basically serves the same purpose.

Your lessons are great, as a long time Photoshop user and lifetime “Artist” as well as being a qualified counseler, I am hoping to learn my way around Gimp so that I can use it to work with counceling clients to help them bring out thier feelings with color and form. Many people can not get Photoshop,so to sugest that would be futile. I just have to get very familiar with GIMP and it is not easy!

    Hi Alex,

I am going through the beginners tutorials and they are great, learned a lot just on the first one. I was wondering if there was a download page to download the images that you work with, within the videos, just so we have about the same affect that you are showing us and experience on our end.

    Thanks, Dale

      Hey dale,

I’m glad the Lessons are helpful. Unfortunately, I did not make the images available for download, but that is a great suggestion. Hopefully I can find them all and I will do this!

Hi – I am enjoying your tutorials! I have used GIMP for several years but only knew how to do one or two things. Thanks for making it easier to understand! I tried subscribing over on the right side of the page, but clicking “submit” did nothing. Have you had anyone else reporting this?? Thanks again!

Hello, Alex. Today i bought your ebooks- all about layers and all about layer masks from Amazon. but when i went to download the sourcefiles from the link(dropbox) i found nothing there. i felt disappointed. i hope you help me with this one soon

    • AlexNo Gravatar says:

Oh no! I wonder what happened! I will get this fixed ASAP!

    • AlexNo Gravatar says:

      Hey raghavendra,

I updated my book, and the update should push to your kindle soon. I don’t want to keep you waiting though. The source files can be downloaded here: http://bit.ly/Uw8M5I

Thanks again for letting me know, and for your patience. If you could please give me a good review on amazon I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I have a question about the dockable dialog boxes. I noticed on your’s you have the tools separate . For what ever reason mine are together. So far it hasn’t created a problem, but how do I separate them ?

    • AlexNo Gravatar says:

      Hey Thomas.

Separating the tools options dialog from your toolbox works the same way as moving any dockable dialog in Gimp. All you need to do is click and drag the word “tool options” over to where you want it to be.

For more info, watch this lesson again (if you haven’t already)

      Hope this helps!

  • Thank you for these lessons Alec – I love digital art & am so pleased to have stumbled across your tutorials ! (cant view them till I get home though) – moving over to Gimp from a very old version of PS. – have already gained a lot from your ebook re layers & masks – so thanks for that.

One thing I must be missing the point on is when you put some text on a screen & then grab the move tool & try & move the text, the layer moves & the text stays where it was ! – occasionally I seem to be able to move the text to where I want it, but I cant figure why sometimes the background moves when I am on the text layer – must be something stupid I am doing !! lol

    All the best,

    Martiin

I’m glad you got a lot from my book! I would very much appreciate it if you would take a moment to review it on amazon. Those reviews are how I sell my book!

As for the move tool – click on the move tool and look at your tool options dockable dialog. There is an option that reads “move the active layer” click on that. That should make moving the text a ton easier. Hope that helps!
